Why Did We Choose Our Pets’ Names? And What’s the Story Behind Yours?

When a pet joins our family, one of the first things we do is… choose a name.

It’s an important moment, but also a rather unusual one.

At that point, we barely know anything about them.

We don’t yet know whether they’ll be calm or mischievous, adventurous or a homebody, very obedient or a lovable little troublemaker.

So we choose a name without really knowing their personality.

And yet, a few months or years later, we often feel as though they simply couldn’t have been called anything else.

Our two dogs are named Largo and Ulk. Each name has its own story and was inspired by two worlds we are particularly fond of.

Largo: A Name Inspired by an Adventurer

Our German Shepherd is named Largo.

His name was inspired by Largo Winch, the famous comic-book hero whose adventures have also been adapted into novels, films, and a television series.

We are huge fans of this universe.

We love Largo Winch’s adventures, his intelligence, courage, travels, and adventurous spirit.

When Largo joined our family, we had absolutely no idea what his personality would be like.

We simply chose a name we liked, one that was easy to pronounce and reminded us of a fictional world we love.

Over time, we discovered a curious and observant dog who is always ready to explore the garden or discover somewhere new.

Today, we almost feel as though the name was meant for him.

Ulk: A Nod to Our Love of Marvel

Our chocolate Labrador is named Ulk.

You’ve probably noticed the resemblance to Hulk.

His name was indeed inspired by the famous Marvel superhero, but we deliberately removed the “H” to create a unique name.

Once again, the choice was directly connected to one of our passions.

We really enjoy the Marvel universe, and Hulk is one of those characters who has always stood out to us.

We also liked the sound of Ulk: short, original, and easy to remember.

There was also a funny little detail that made us smile when we went to pick him up.

He was already wearing a… green collar!

It was impossible not to see it as a little nod to his namesake.

Although, of course, we had already chosen his name before he arrived.

Today, Ulk is bursting with energy and loves playing and running around everywhere.

Fortunately for us, he is much more affectionate than his famous namesake!

Can You Really Choose a Name Based on Personality?

In reality… not really.

When we welcome a puppy, kitten, or any other young animal into our home, their personality is still developing.

There is no way of knowing whether they will be shy, extremely playful, independent, or particularly affectionate.

That means a pet’s name is often chosen with the heart.

It may remind us of a memory, a character we love, a passion, a book, a film, or simply be a name whose sound we enjoy.

Only with time do we discover whether the name truly suits them.

Very often… it does.

Should You Choose a Short Pet Name?

Dog trainers generally recommend names consisting of one or two syllables.

They are easier to pronounce, and pets can often learn to recognize them more quickly.

Names such as Rio, Nala, Max, Luna, and Milo are very popular for this reason.

Largo and Ulk also fit this general rule.

But the most important thing is to choose a name you will enjoy saying every day.

After all, you’ll probably say it… thousands of times throughout your pet’s life!

Every Name Has a Story Behind It

Every pet owner finds inspiration in a different way.

Some choose a name inspired by:

  • a film;

  • a comic book;

  • a television series;

  • a video game;

  • a book;

  • mythology;

  • a journey;

  • or simply a name they find beautiful.

There is no right or wrong choice.

The most beautiful name is often the one that tells a story.

And sometimes that story says just as much about the owners as it does about their companion.

Now It’s Your Turn!

Now that you know the story behind Largo and Ulk’s names, we’d love to hear yours.

What is your companion called?

Why did you choose that name?

Was it inspired by a film character, a comic book, a book, one of your passions, or simply a name you fell in love with?

Tell us the story on our social media or in the comments.

We can’t wait to discover all your stories!

🐾 Did You Know?

Did you know that dogs can learn to recognize their names very quickly?

By associating their name with positive experiences, such as being petted, playing, or receiving a treat, a puppy can begin to recognize it within just a few days.

A name is therefore more than just something that sounds nice: it is also one of the first words your pet will learn and recognize throughout their life.

In Conclusion

Choosing your pet’s name is a unique moment.

We do it before we even know their personality, simply because we like a name, it reminds us of something we love, or it brings back a special memory.

For us, Largo and Ulk were inspired by two worlds we are very fond of: the adventures of Largo Winch and the Marvel universe.

Over time, these names have become much more than simple names.

They are now part of their identity… and part of our story.
